The general purpose of my model is to identify three types of adult Antarctic penguins: Chinstrap (Pygoscelis antarcticus), Southern Rockhopper (Eudyptes chrysocome), and Emperor (Aptenodytes forsteri) using object detection on the website Roboflow. The intended audience for this model is K-5 elementary school teachers. According to Next Generation Science Standards, children in grades 3-5 are being taught about biological evolution, genetic variation, and inheritance of certain traits according to their surroundings. I believe this model may be used in these classrooms as a tool for teachers to supplement their lesson plans with hands-on, real-life examples of genetic variation.
The sample size for Pygoscelis antarcticus (Chinstrap penguin) is 177 images, and 541 annotations. The sample size for Eudyptes chrysocome (Southern Rockhopper penguin) is 111 samples and 373 annotations. The sample size for Aptenodytes forsteri (Emperor penguin) is 171 samples and 541 annotations. The data for all three of the penguins was sourced from Roboflow. The data for the first 80 images of Southern Rockhopper penguins were sourced from iNaturalist.
This model was created for a class assignment in AI and Natural History at St. Mary’s College of Maryland.
